Layer Masking in photoshop

Masking word as itself implies, mask, which hides the object behind it. When we create a layer mask for a particular layer, that layer gets converted into a mask on the layer just beneath it. That means when we remove some portion from that mask, the layer below the mask will be visible through that portion. Another thing to note here is that masking works in two colors, black and white.

Black colour is used to reveal the image behind the mask and white color is used to hide that image through the layer mask.

Layer masking technique is widely used in creating movie posters because use of paintbrush and it's principles give a wonderful graphic finishing. Here are two images that I had created recently in photoshop using masking technique

For this image, I downloaded the fingerprint image from internet and layer masked it to reveal ourselves.

The image of mila kunis was taken from google and I layer masked my face to reveal Mila Kunis. I used a square brush to remove the portions from mask

Logo and Poster Design

For our major project this year, I chose to start with making logo of a restaurent (fictional one). LEt me showcase that first

The concept behind this logo was, as you can see here in the picture, there is a side view of a face whose mouth is wide open and consists of Burger, Chicken leg piece, sector of a pizza and a bunch of french fries;  name of the restaurent , I kept it The Hunger Cames where the letter 'C' plays the mouth. Basically, long story short, I just had two Chaklis for breakfast that day at the tea shop and I was extremely hungry and I literally wanted to eat a lot of junk food together. So basically, here I myself was the reference and that's how this logo came out. So when hunger comes to you, this is how you feel like. Now lets move to the posters

Green, my favourite colour as well as a design saviour is probably the only color that can said to be available in attractive shades and so has been used extensively in the poster above. I wont lie, all the images were downloaded from google. In the left side at the bottom the list of text that you see under 'Chef Suggestion' heading and tagline is basically dummy text from Lorem Ipsum.

Another style of design is shown in this poster, also a very time saving. Blur an image in photoshop and import it to illustrator where the only thing you have to take care about is your typography.  The typography should be such that it comes out and in a very sober way invites you to the restaurent. BTW out of all the eatables kept on the table, I havent had a taste of even a single one.

This one is my favourite , so would love to tell you more in detail. For most of the part, Photoshop was used. The wood has been made in photoshop, the table mat has been made in photoshop. The big plate where the logo is placed had been made in photoshop. Drop shadow for the meals kept below on the wood was done with photoshop with the help of burn tool. Then after importing the psd file to Adobe illustrator, the spoon and fork was made with the help of pen tool. I know I could have done that in photoshop also but I like using pen tool more in illustrator because there's no headache of pressing alt key to delete anchor. The logo place and typography was again executed in Adobe Illustrator. The text again is dummy text, thankyou Lorem Ipsum.

A very simple yet long story short kind of poster with the minimal usage of graphics and colors.

This one took long. Since I had to emphasize on specific menu item of the restaurant I had to create it's environment. The specific item put up is my favourite, Hyderabadi Biryani and when one takes the name Hyderabad, Charminar flashes in our mind, isnt it ? So I created a color splash edit  of Charminar first, and if you zoom in, you will be able to see peepal leaves, that was the brush preset I chose. Then I imported the image to illustrator for further editing. There I created the circular hanging tag, the hand lifting the biryani and typography. The biryani was image-traced from another biryani image.

This also took me long because there was a lot to do, The mattes are created in photoshop,  they are shown folded by the help of warp function in photoshop. For smoke I experimented with many brush strokes, and the masala shown is actualy png images of red chilly, green cilly, onion etc. Then image was imported to illustrator where typography was done.

Concludingly, whenever you make an outdoor poster, do mention address. You can freely use text because the best thing about posters are that, the passerby will have time to stand in front of it and read it. This wont be allowed in hoarding, but more about that later.

2016 Calendar Design

We are about 28 days close to 2016, and this pretty much seemed to be the right time to exhibit my calendar designs that I made using coral draw version x7.

In these designs I haven't paid much attention to holidays marking because personally I am very bad in dates, what I actually paid attention to was the abstract designs in the background that I made using Beizer tool. Just to reveal the dates properly I had used rectangle shape just behind them and adjusted the transparency, this allows the reader to view the calendar dates as well as keeping his enthusiasm maintained for the abstract background. I have used this concept for most of the calendar.

Have a look at these designs and do share your views for further improvement of my knowledge.
